Community Comes First

Build Our Community Together, the first strategic initiative of Carolina’s strategic framework, Carolina Next: Innovations for the Public Good, is already well underway.

This initiative focuses on diversity, equity and inclusion and brings together representatives from every school and division at Carolina to work in centralized, coordinated ways. Through the newly formed University Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council, engagement with schools and divisions, a race and equity survey, and virtual town halls with the UNC System, Carolina is bringing together community members to address this commitment.

Sixteen faculty and staff recently revised the initiative’s goals and opportunities to increase their effectiveness. Sibby Anderson-Thompins, special adviser on equity and inclusion and interim chief diversity officer, and Amy Locklear Hertel, the chancellor’s chief of staff, are the co-captains of this initiative and are working hard to ensure that Carolina continues to be a more inclusive University community.
